Earth now has a ‘mini moon’ as small asteroid joins our orbit

Earth has welcomed a new addition to its celestial family in the form of a ‘mini moon’ after an asteroid recently entered our orbit. This extraordinary event marks the presence of a small asteroid named 2024 PT5, which has been steadily approaching Earth over the years. The asteroid has finally come close enough to be captured by Earth’s gravity, making it a temporary companion in our orbit until November.

Mini-moons such as 2024 PT5 occur when an asteroid navigates its way towards Earth in a manner that allows our planet’s gravity to exert a greater influence on it than the Sun’s gravitational pull. These mini-moons are typically made up of asteroids or other cosmic objects drifting in space, though there have been instances where human-made debris has also been caught in Earth’s gravity.

The discovery of this mini-moon, 2024 PT5, was only made last month by scientists participating in the Asteroid Terrestrial-Impact Last Alert System. Despite its sudden appearance in our orbit, this mini-moon poses no immediate threat to Earth. Researchers anticipate that 2024 PT5 will follow a horseshoe-like trajectory around Earth before breaking free from our orbit around 25th November and resuming its path around the Sun.

While visible with specialized telescopes, the mini-moon is too faint and diminutive to be observed with the naked eye. It is believed to have originated from the Arjuna belt, a region where small celestial bodies abound. Although encounters with small objects like 2024 PT5 are relatively common, it is a rare occurrence for them to establish a temporary residency in Earth’s orbit.

Interestingly, various planets, including Jupiter, have also hosted their own mini-moons due to their significant mass and gravitational pull. These celestial phenomena are not exclusive to Earth and serve as a captivating reminder of the intricate interactions within our solar system. As 2024 PT5 embarks on its journey away from our orbit, astronomers predict a potential return flyby in 2055, offering future opportunities for observation and study.
