I thought back pain was due to bending over patients – until I had urgent call

A gynaecologist who initially attributed her back pain to her work as a consultant later discovered she had leukaemia, a type of cancer. Ellissa Baskind, a 46-year-old consultant gynaecologist, had been experiencing worsening back pain, which she believed was due to the numerous operations she was performing. However, when the pain started affecting her daily life, especially during a work Christmas party where she couldn’t fully participate, she sought medical help.

Despite initially clear x-ray results, Ellissa was urgently summoned to the hospital after abnormalities were found in her blood tests. There, she received the shocking diagnosis of leukaemia and was advised to undergo further tests. Ellissa expressed her disbelief at the diagnosis, as she had no other symptoms besides back pain between her shoulder blades. After an unsuccessful bout of chemotherapy, she underwent an urgent stem cell transplant, only to face another challenge 18 months later when a lump was discovered in her breast, diagnosed as myeloid sarcoma, a rare type of cancerous tumor.

Although initially believing her condition was palliative, Ellissa underwent a second successful stem cell transplant and additional chemotherapy cycles, leading to her current state of good health. She emphasises the importance of listening to one’s body, not ignoring symptoms, and persevering until a diagnosis is obtained. Ellissa reflects on her journey, expressing gratitude for being alive and sharing how her experience as a patient has influenced her approach towards her own patients.

In a remarkable turn of events, Ellissa’s resilience and determination led her to overcome the challenges posed by her diagnosis. Her story serves as a reminder of the importance of seeking medical attention, staying hopeful during difficult times, and embracing each day. Ellissa’s courage and positive outlook have not only transformed her own life but also inspired others facing similar battles.
