The panic was sparked by smoke emanating from a smouldering film reel at the Glen Cinema, leading to a heart-wrenching tragedy.
Survivor Emily Brown, despite several weather warnings, attended a memorial service at Dunn Square in Paisley. The service, held at the memorial statue just 100 yards from the site of the disaster, marked the 95th anniversary of the event, known as Black Hogmanay. Over 600 children were packed into the cinema for a matinee showing when the smoke began filling the auditorium. Panic ensued, and the locked fire door prevented the children from escaping, resulting in a fatal crush.
The annual memorial event has been a tradition, except for 2020, since the 80th anniversary. Organised by the Paisley Community Development Trust in the past, former members like Tony Lawler now continue to honour the memory of the children. Tony emphasised the importance of remembering the 71 lives lost and offering condolences to their families and support to the survivors and their loved ones.
