Stewartry Food Projects Receive Overwhelming Community Support during Festive Season
Community members of Stewartry have come together in a remarkable show of generosity to help those in need during the festive period. Donations of food and toys poured in to various projects to ensure that everyone could experience the joy of Christmas.
One of the projects that received significant support was the community pantry managed by Dalbeattie Community Initiative. Michelle McRobert, the initiative’s chief executive, expressed gratitude for the outpouring of donations, especially towards the Christmas gift appeal. The pantry has been seeing a steady flow of around 300 shoppers every month, with an increase in demand during the colder months.
Another project, the Stepping Stones Community Larder and Food Bank in Castle Douglas, experienced a surge in demand as well. With a membership fee of £1 per year, individuals can receive 10 staple food items weekly for £3, with additional free fresh produce available. Families can avail of 20 items for £6, making it affordable for those in need.
Leanne Latta, the manager of the larder, highlighted the overwhelming response from the community, especially during the holiday season. The initiative not only provides essential food items but also distributes surplus food from local stores to those in need. The support received from various organisations and individuals has been instrumental in meeting the increasing demand for assistance.
In addition to food donations, the project also received an abundance of toys through an appeal led by Royal Mail Castle Douglas cover manager Graeme Woods. The support extended by the community during this period was described as ‘off the scale’ by project managers, reflecting the goodwill and compassion prevalent in the region.
The Stewartry Food Bank, established in 2012, continues to provide invaluable support to the Kirkcudbright, Gatehouse, Dundrennan, and Twynholm areas. With around 500 parcels distributed annually, the organisation relies on the unwavering support of the community to fulfil its mission.
Marian Dixon, from the Stewartry Food Bank, commended the community for their continuous support and generosity. Despite the challenges faced, including a lack of elderly individuals seeking assistance, the organisation remains dedicated to ensuring that no one goes hungry in the region.
The festive season has truly brought out the best in the Stewartry community, showcasing the power of collective action and kindness in making a difference in the lives of those facing hardships. The spirit of giving and support displayed during this time reflects the true essence of community solidarity and compassion.
