According to NHS guidance, antiviral medication can help shorten herpes outbreaks if taken promptly when symptoms appear. Recurrent outbreaks tend to become less severe over time for many individuals, with some never experiencing outbreaks. In cases of frequent outbreaks, long-term antiviral treatment may be recommended.
