Plans for a multi-million pound investment in one of Dumfries and Galloway’s key tourist attractions have been revealed, with hopes of attracting thousands of new visitors to the region. The proposal includes the expansion of Moffat Mill and the creation of new parking facilities at the site, which currently draws in visitors from all over the UK.
Owned by Equorium Property Company Ltd (EPC), Moffat Mill is operated by Purepay Retail Ltd under the Edinburgh Woollen Mill brand, alongside more than 20 other sites. The adjoining site of the former Mercury Motor Inn, closed in 1999 and demolished in 2024, is also under EPC’s ownership. Plans submitted to Dumfries and Galloway Council outline the development of a new car park on the cleared inn site, modifications to the existing car park to accommodate coaches, motorhomes, and disabled parking, and an extension to the mill with additional amenities such as electric vehicle charging points, outdoor seating, and improved access for cyclists and walkers.
The aim of the investment is to enhance the visitor experience, particularly for long-distance coach trips to Moffat, with projections indicating a potential increase of 65,000 visitors annually. Despite the current success of the centre, there has been a decline in coach party visits in recent years, prompting the need for improvements to cater to modern coach standards. The anticipated enhancements include upgraded coach parking, new facilities for drivers, and an improved restaurant area.
If approved, the project supported by VisitScotland could commence construction in late summer, targeting completion by spring 2026. The revitalisation is expected to not only maintain Moffat Mill’s prestigious four-star status but also secure existing jobs and generate around five new employment opportunities. The overall goal is to elevate Moffat as a premier destination within Dumfries and Galloway, benefiting both the local economy and tourism sector.
In conclusion, the planned investment in Moffat Mill signals a significant opportunity to bolster tourism in Dumfries and Galloway, enriching the visitor experience and contributing to the region’s economic growth. By modernising facilities, expanding amenities, and accommodating evolving travel preferences, the project sets a promising trajectory for Moffat’s future as a thriving tourist destination.
