Dumfries-based Youth Volunteers Support Homeless Charity
A Dumfries and Galloway homeless support charity, SHAX, received a much-needed helping hand from dedicated Police Scotland Youth Volunteers based in Dumfries. The young volunteers undertook a significant task to assist SHAX in providing support to individuals and families facing crisis due to poverty or homelessness in the region. Established in 2012 and located at the Crichton, SHAX works tirelessly to meet the rising demand for emergency starter packs containing essential items for homeless or temporarily housed individuals.
The generous donations from the public, including items for starter packs, backpacks, stationery, and toys for children, were collected by the Dumfries PSYV throughout December. SHAX, which is mainly self-funded through the sale of pre-loved items, heavily relies on donations and volunteer support to sustain its operations and offer crucial services in Dumfries and Galloway. Every penny generated by SHAX is reinvested to ensure the continuity of their much-needed support.
The Dumfries PSYV went above and beyond by personally delivering the donated items to SHAX and assisting in preparing starter packs for community members transitioning into their first homes. Subsequently, the young volunteers returned to the SHAX warehouse to aid in end-of-year cleaning and organizing tasks, ensuring the facility is ready for the upcoming year. A spokesperson for SHAX expressed deep appreciation for the dedication and hard work of the Dumfries Police Scotland Youth Volunteers, emphasising the invaluable impact of their contributions.
In addition to their recent efforts, the Dumfries PSYV had previously engaged in charitable activities by filling over 200 shoeboxes and hampers with gifts for those in need during Christmas 2023. Their commitment to supporting the community through initiatives like these exemplifies their compassion and dedication to making a positive difference in the lives of others.
In conclusion, the collaboration between the Police Scotland Youth Volunteers and SHAX serves as a heartwarming example of community spirit and the power of collective action in assisting those experiencing hardship. Their joint efforts not only provide essential resources to those in need but also foster a sense of unity and support within the local community.
