Coltness Community Council in Wishaw has decided not to put up a Christmas tree this year due to escalating costs amounting to nearly £3000. This marks the second consecutive year the council has opted out of installing a tree. In a statement on their Facebook page, the community council explained, “It’s only early October and we have Halloween and Guy Fawkes’ Night still to take place. However, Christmas is at the front of the minds of Coltness Community Council and the subject of the Christmas tree!”
The council elaborated on their financial constraints, stating, “Last year we made the decision not to have a Community Christmas Tree due to the cost and we felt we couldn’t justify it when there were so many families struggling. Well, this year’s bill is a whopping £2854.81.” Despite their disappointment in not being able to offer a Christmas tree, the council plans to host a Christmas Fun Day as a gesture of giving back to the community.
Angela Kyle, a member of the community council, shared, “Christmas is all about giving and that will be our gift to the community this year. Last year, our Christmas party went down a storm so we will hope for something similar this year.” The decision to forego the Christmas tree has garnered support from locals, with one resident expressing anticipation to see the financial breakdown of costs.
Meanwhile, the community council is maintaining its fortnightly larder sessions in October and November, scheduled for October 11 and 25, as well as November 8 and 22 at St Mark’s Church in Coltness Road. The council’s commitment to alternative community activities alongside their civic decisions demonstrates a dedication to fostering a festive spirit despite financial limitations.
