McDonald’s ‘sex for shifts’ scandal as 700 staff take action against fast food chain

McDonald’s is under fire as 700 current and former young staff members have taken legal action against the fast-food giant, alleging harassment and abuse during their time working at the chain. The allegations include claims of a manager asking a 17-year-old employee for sex in exchange for extra shifts, inappropriate touching, racial discrimination, and other forms of harassment.

Law firm Leigh Day is representing the staff members, who were 19 years old or younger when they worked at McDonald’s. More than 450 McDonald’s restaurants in the UK have been implicated in the claims, which range from discrimination to homophobia and racism. Despite promises from McDonald’s UK boss to address these issues, employees continue to report instances of sexual abuse and harassment.

McDonald’s has faced scrutiny from the Commons’ Business and Trade Committee, where Alistair Macrow defended the company’s actions to improve working conditions. However, allegations persist, with claims of managers being involved in the harassment of young staff members. McDonald’s has stated that any misconduct or harassment is not tolerated and will be thoroughly investigated.

One employee shared their experience of facing homophobic comments from managers and crew members and feeling unable to speak up about it. Others recounted incidents of managers making inappropriate advances or inappropriate touching, leading them to quit their jobs. The legal action taken by the staff members aims to hold McDonald’s accountable for creating a safe and respectful workplace environment.

In response to the allegations, McDonald’s emphasised its commitment to ensuring the safety of its employees and conducting thorough investigations into any reported incidents of misconduct or harassment. The company has introduced new programmes to enhance training and awareness around these issues. Despite the challenges, McDonald’s maintains that it is dedicated to eliminating all forms of harassment within its workforce.

The ongoing legal action against McDonald’s highlights the importance of upholding safe working environments and holding corporations accountable for addressing instances of harassment and discrimination. The case serves as a reminder of the need for robust measures to protect employees and prevent such misconduct from occurring in the future.
