Scots Takeaway Owner Involved in £500k Cocaine Bust Claims Framing by Brother
A Scottish takeaway restaurant owner, Nadeem Ahmed, has been sentenced to six years in jail after being caught with 12kg of cocaine, valued at £500,000. The drugs were found in the boot of his car during a stop in Glasgow’s Knightswood on June 17, 2022. Ahmed, 41, initially believed the bags he was collecting contained designer clothes and trainers, attributing the discovery to being framed by his younger brother, who he claimed has disappeared.
During the trial at the High Court in Glasgow, Ahmed alleged that his accountant brother, who had lost his job during the Covid pandemic, set him up by entrusting him with the bags without disclosing their actual contents. Despite his assertions of innocence, jurors found Ahmed guilty of involvement in cocaine supply, leading to his sentencing by Judge Bruce Errock KC.
According to Ahmed, his relationship with his brother deteriorated after the latter lost his job and became unreliable in their shared business ventures. Ahmed recalled a trip to Dubai with his brother, after which his sibling supposedly abandoned him, leaving Ahmed to deal with the consequences alone. Even though Ahmed expressed suspicions about the bags, he claimed he had no knowledge of their illicit contents, believing them to be clothing items.
When questioned by police upon the discovery of the drugs in his possession along with a sum of cash, Ahmed felt betrayed by his brother, whom he accused of jealousy and setting him up due to envy of his successful business status. Despite these claims, prosecutors argued that Ahmed made a conscious decision to engage in criminal activities. Another individual, Kerr Jones, was sentenced to three years and 11 months for his involvement in the drug operation prior to Ahmed’s trial.
In his sentencing remarks, Judge Errock highlighted that the jury had rejected Ahmed’s allegations against his brother and emphasised Ahmed’s active role in the drug operation. While Ahmed’s account painted him as a victim of circumstances orchestrated by his brother, the legal proceedings revealed a different narrative of his culpability in the crime.
