Soldier Killed in Scottish Highlands During Training Exercise, Inquiry Reveals
A tragic incident occurred in the Scottish Highlands when a soldier lost his life due to an unexpected rifle detonation during a training exercise. After a thorough investigation, Sheriff Gary Aitken highlighted L/Cpl Spencer’s failure to properly unload his rifle following a live fire exercise earlier that day as a contributing factor to the tragedy. The sheriff also identified shortcomings in the training delivery process and the absence of a safety officer during the crucial rifle unloading procedure.
Despite no faults found with the rifle that could cause a misfire, the sheriff concluded that the accidental discharge was likely caused by the trigger snagging on equipment while L/Cpl Spencer repositioned the weapon. He emphasised that the soldier’s death was the outcome of a series of unfortunate events involving multiple individuals, including L/Cpl Spencer himself.
In expressing his condolences to L/Cpl Spencer’s family, friends, and colleagues, Sheriff Aitken acknowledged the young soldier’s exemplary character and dedication to serving others. Procurator Fiscal Andy Shanks also extended sympathies to those affected by the tragic loss.
