Five fatalities have been reported and Hollywood Boulevard has been evacuated as an estimated 100,000 individuals have fled their homes amidst the devastating California wildfires that have been rapidly spreading. The iconic Hollywood Boulevard was cleared out as warnings were issued for residents to prepare to evacuate due to the destructive nature of the wildfires. The most recent fire began in the Hollywood Hills and swiftly approached within a close distance of landmarks such as the Hollywood Bowl and the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Helicopters were observed flying low to release water onto the flames, while tourists and locals evacuated hotels on foot. Some individuals even ventured closer to the scene to capture the devastation on their mobile devices.
Tragically, the fires have claimed at least five lives as they ravage through southern California, with notable figures like Diane Warren witnessing their properties being engulfed by the inferno. In the Hollywood Hills area alone, over 1,000 buildings, mostly residences, have been destroyed, leading to evacuation orders impacting over 130,000 people. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has confirmed that aerial firefighting efforts are underway to combat the blaze amidst warnings of erratic winds, albeit not as severe as those experienced during the initial large-scale damage. Several local schools have suffered damage or destruction, including Palisades Charter High School, known for its appearances in various Hollywood productions.
Residents like Jose Velasquez took measures to protect their homes, with Velasquez dousing his Altadena property with water as embers fell from the sky, miraculously sparing his residence. However, other homes and businesses in the Verdugo Mountains area of Los Angeles were not as fortunate, with pools tainted with ash and luxury cars damaged atop melted tires. Over a thousand structures in Pacific Palisades have been impacted by the catastrophic fires, resulting in injuries to both residents and first responders. President Joe Biden declared a federal emergency following a meeting with Gov. Gavin Newsom at a Santa Monica fire station, where they were briefed on the unfolding situation. National Guard troops have been mobilised to provide assistance.
The chaos and destruction have led to halts in filming at several Hollywood studios, with Universal Studios temporarily closing its theme park located between Pasadena and Pacific Palisades. The wildfires have left a trail of devastation, prompting a unified response from local authorities and communities to combat and recover from the significant impact of the fires.
