Heavy smoke continues to engulf the area along Interstate 20 east of Atlanta, originating from a troubled chlorine facility, causing low visibility for motorists. Emergency officials have issued warnings that the smoke is expected to shift towards Atlanta as the winds change direction.
Following a chemical fire at the BioLab plant in Conyers, Georgia, which occurred three days ago, residents in Rockdale County are advised to shelter in place from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. until Friday due to concerns about air quality reaching alarming levels. The thick chemical cloud has been affecting visibility on Interstate 20 near the plant, prompting drivers to roll up their windows in the area.
Residents in Atlanta and its suburbs have also reported experiencing a strong chemical odour and haze, even miles away from the plant located approximately 25 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta. The Georgia Department of Transportation confirmed that winds are set to shift westward, pushing the smoke towards Atlanta.
The Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency stated that the smoke is likely to descend closer to the ground as it approaches Atlanta, potentially leading to hazy conditions and a chlorine smell in the city by Thursday morning. Monitoring around the facility overnight detected elevated chlorine levels above the action threshold.
While the fire at the BioLab plant was contained on Sunday afternoon, material on-site continues to smoulder. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire and assess the handling of the situation. Several destructive incidents have occurred at the Conyers complex in the past, including warehouse explosions in 2004 and fires in 2015 and 2016, which resulted in injuries and evacuations.
Authorities had to shut down Interstate 20 in September 2020 due to a chemical fire at the same facility, sending nine firefighters to hospitals for treatment after inhaling hazardous vapours. BioLab, the company responsible for the plant, specialises in swimming pool and spa water care products and is based in Lawrenceville, Georgia.
As the situation unfolds, efforts are ongoing to ensure the safety of residents in the affected areas and to prevent further environmental impact.
