Beach walkers in Scotland were left stunned after discovering a massive sperm whale skull washed up on the shore. Samuel Watkiss, along with his fiance Emelie Persson, stumbled upon the unusual sight while out for a walk on Traigh Thodhrasdail beach on the island of Tiree. Watkiss, a keen surfer and environmentalist, initially wasn’t sure which part of the whale the skull belonged to or even the species. After posting photos on Facebook, he learned that the skull had been separated from a decomposing sperm whale body found in its entirety the previous June.
Hayley, a Tiree Ranger working for Tiree Community Development Trust, was expecting to find a minke whale after receiving a message about a dead whale washing ashore at The Maze. However, she was surprised to discover a 15-meter-long adult male Sperm Whale instead. Sperm Whales are deep-sea diving whales known to dive up to three kilometers and use echolocation to find their prey. The worn teeth of the whale suggest it may have died of old age or its carcass being dragged along the seabed.
The high tides following the discovery of the whale caused the skull to become detached and lie about 80 meters from the rest of the whale. The whale has been recorded by the Scottish Marine Animal Strandings Scheme and the Receiver of Wrecks & Coastguard, as it is classified as a royal fish, belonging to the Scottish Government. Sperm Whales are a rare sight off the Hebrides, with only one or two seen each year, making this find particularly unusual.
