Thousands of residents in Airdrie are being left behind in terms of faster and more reliable broadband access, according to Openreach. The company has highlighted that approximately 16,000 homes and businesses in the area now have the opportunity to upgrade to full fibre broadband. However, only around 18 percent of them have taken advantage of this option so far. Openreach is urging local residents to check if they are eligible for the upgrade.
Robert Thorburn, the Openreach Scotland partnership manager, emphasised the significant benefits of fast and reliable full fibre broadband. He mentioned how it can positively impact daily lives for both households and businesses, allowing for smoother online activities like streaming, gaming, video calls, and more. Thorburn also pointed out that the network supports over 700 service providers, offering a variety of packages and prices for consumers to choose from.
Sara Thiam, the chief executive at Prosper, highlighted the advantages of ultrafast broadband in giving businesses a competitive edge and providing families with future-proof connectivity. She emphasised the positive impact this could have on people’s lives in Airdrie, not just economically but also environmentally.
Openreach’s push for a wider adoption of full fibre broadband comes as their new fibre network in Scotland now reaches over 1.4 million properties. The company aims to extend this technology to 25 million homes and businesses by the end of 2026, with hopes to reach up to 30 million by the end of the decade.
