Openreach warns thousands in Rutherglen are missing out on better broadband

Openreach, a national digital network provider, has issued a warning to thousands of residents and businesses in Rutherglen regarding the lack of access to faster and more reliable broadband services. Despite approximately 6,400 properties in the area being eligible for an upgrade to full fibre broadband, only around 16% have taken advantage of this opportunity so far. Openreach is urging local residents to check their eligibility for an upgrade by visiting their website and considering the benefits that come with it.

Robert Thorburn, the Scotland partnership manager at Openreach, emphasised the positive impact that fast and reliable full fibre broadband can have on both households and businesses. He highlighted the importance of actively placing orders through broadband service providers to benefit from these upgraded services. The full fibre technology offers a more stable connection, catering to various digital needs such as streaming, gaming, video calls, financial transactions, and business operations efficiently.

Moreover, Sara Thiam, the chief executive at Prosper – the Scottish economic alliance, underlined the advantages of ultrafast broadband in giving businesses a competitive edge and ensuring households have future-proof connectivity. She emphasised the positive impact on people’s lives and the environment, reinforcing the potential benefits for the local economy in Rutherglen.

Openreach’s ongoing efforts in expanding their fibre network across Scotland have resulted in over 1.4 million properties being covered by the new technology. The company aims to extend this initiative to 25 million homes and businesses by 2026, with further aspirations to reach up to 30 million by the end of the decade.

In summary, Openreach’s initiative to encourage residents in Rutherglen to upgrade to full fibre broadband is a significant opportunity for the community to benefit from enhanced connectivity and improved services. By taking advantage of these advancements, residents and businesses can enjoy faster speeds, more reliable connections, and a range of competitively priced packages from various broadband providers. Embracing this technological advancement not only enhances daily lives but also contributes to the local economy and environmental sustainability.
