North Carolina Lieutenant Governor, Mark Robinson, faced backlash as public records revealed he did not vote to pass an emergency relief declaration for Hurricane Helene as it approached the state. The scandal-hit Republican skipped out on the vote on September 25, just before the destructive storm made its impact, leaving communities devastated and causing at least 160 fatalities across multiple states.
Governor Roy Cooper of North Carolina disclosed that efforts were underway to determine the number of missing individuals, with expectations of further casualties. On September 24, a concurrence request for an executive order was dispatched from the governor’s office, necessitating approval from elected officials to activate specific authorities under the state’s Emergency Management Act. This approval would empower the governor to expedite rescue operations, implement evacuations, and initiate other emergency measures by waiving certain transportation regulations for heavy vehicles.
Despite the urgent need for coordinated response actions, Robinson did not engage with the approval process, raising concerns among the public. Subsequently, he resorted to urging Governor Cooper to enhance efforts by deploying additional resources and National Guard personnel for search-and-rescue missions. In a social media post, Robinson pushed for immediate involvement of private industries to support rescue operations, recovery initiatives, and infrastructure restoration.
Following the media’s exposure of Robinson’s absence during the emergency declaration vote, he redirected blame towards Governor Cooper and other Democrats, criticising their purported lack of preparedness for the impending storm. Amidst the political spat, Robinson reaffirmed his commitment, along with his team, to assist affected neighbours in the aftermath of the catastrophic hurricane. Robinson is currently contending against Democratic gubernatorial nominee Josh Stein in the North Carolina gubernatorial race as a Republican candidate, even though his campaign has been tarnished by recent scandals.
A recent CNN investigation implicated Robinson in posting racially and sexually offensive comments on a pornography website named Nude Africa. The investigation presented evidence linking Robinson to the comments through an email address and screen name, showcasing derogatory remarks insinuating support for slavery and other indecent discussions. Despite denying responsibility for the offensive remarks, Robinson initiated a legal investigation into the matter. Consequently, several Republican members distanced themselves from Robinson after the report, with former President Donald Trump refraining from endorsing Robinson, in contrast to his prior vocal support.
Moreover, a significant number of Robinson’s campaign and office staff resigned following the scandal, reflecting the severity of the allegations against him. The unfolding events have jeopardised Robinson’s political standing as he strives to salvage his campaign amidst mounting controversies.
