Alex Salmond’s death did not change anything for me, says Nicola Sturgeon

Nicola Sturgeon has spoken out about how the death of Alex Salmond did not impact her feelings towards him, stating that she had already grieved for him years ago. The former First Minister of Scotland, Alex Salmond, passed away in October last year due to a heart attack in North Macedonia. Despite paying tribute to Salmond upon his death, Sturgeon revealed that she was not invited to his funeral and did not attend a condolences debate at Holyrood.

The rift between Sturgeon and Salmond occurred when the Scottish government, led by Sturgeon, investigated sexual harassment allegations against Salmond. Although Salmond was acquitted of the charges in 2020, the relationship between the two remained strained, leading Salmond to establish the Alba Party in pursuit of independence.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Sturgeon expressed that she had accepted the likelihood of never speaking to Salmond again. She explained that any potential conversation with him would require acknowledgment of his actions. Sturgeon shared her insight into witnessing the impact of the allegations on the women involved and the subsequent behaviors exhibited by Salmond, referring to the experience as challenging.

When questioned about whether Salmond’s death had any effect on her, Sturgeon stated, “No . . . I came to the conclusion that I probably grieved for Alex four years, five years ago.” She also disclosed that she knew some of the women who had made accusations against Salmond. Sturgeon’s comments provide a glimpse into the complex dynamics of political relationships and personal values in the face of adversity.

In conclusion, Nicola Sturgeon’s remarks shed light on the enduring tensions and personal reflections in the aftermath of Alex Salmond’s passing. The delicate balance between professional responsibilities and personal beliefs underscores the complexities of leadership and accountability within political spheres. Sturgeon’s candid reflections offer a glimpse into the challenges of navigating relationships amid contentious circumstances, reminding us of the human aspects behind political figures and their legacies.
