Eight things your feet can tell you about your health – from skin cancer to diabetes

Podiatrists are urging people not to neglect their feet as they can reveal more about health than just standing, walking, and running. Your feet can provide crucial signs of major health issues such as stroke, diabetes, heart disease, and even melanoma. Emma McConnachie, a podiatrist and spokesperson for the Royal College of Podiatry, emphasises the importance of examining your feet for indicators of underlying health conditions.

Podiatrists, experts on feet and lower limbs, can identify various serious health problems by simply observing your feet. Beyond common foot issues like ingrown toenails, corns, and verrucae, they can detect signs of circulatory problems, heart disease, diabetes, and neurological conditions. One key sign to look out for is changes in sensations like tingling or numbness, which can indicate nerve-related issues caused by various factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, diabetes, or heart disease.

Itchy feet could signify more than just dry skin or a fungal infection; it might indicate kidney or liver problems, hormonal changes, or skin conditions. Additionally, discoloured nails could potentially be a sign of melanoma, a type of skin cancer. Flaking or cracked skin on your feet may be a symptom of dehydration, blood pressure issues, cardiovascular conditions, or thyroid problems.

Auto-immune conditions like psoriasis can impact feet and nails, while neurological conditions such as strokes can cause sudden changes in foot shape. Recurring foot problems like fungal or bacterial infections could signal underlying issues like type 2 diabetes or pernicious anaemia. Monitoring changes in your feet can lead to timely intervention and treatment for potential health concerns.

In summary, paying attention to your feet can provide valuable insights into your overall health and help in early detection of various health conditions. Regular foot examinations and prompt consultation with a podiatrist or GP upon noticing any unusual signs or symptoms are crucial for maintaining good health. By taking care of your feet, you are taking a proactive step towards a healthier lifestyle and well-being.
