A Scots husband, who is currently facing murder charges for allegedly killing his wife, was called a “wife cheater” on the night before her death, the court heard. Walter Buchanan is accused of murdering Darrell Buchanan at their luxury flat near Hamilton racecourse in Lanarkshire on February 18, 2023. The prosecution claims that the 66-year-old restrained Darrell by the wrists, hit her on the head, compressed her neck, and covered her nose and mouth. The High Court in Glasgow was informed that Buchanan told PC Ewan Nolan on the day of Darrell’s death that she accused him of cheating the previous night.
Buchanan explained that on the night before the incident, he went out with friends in Bothwell, Lanarkshire, while Darrell stayed at home. He received a text message from Darrell calling him a “wife cheater,” but he chose not to respond. When he returned home in the early hours of the morning, Darrell was in bed, but he discovered her cold to the touch later in the morning. Buchanan claimed he tried to perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on her before calling emergency services. He denied cheating on Darrell and stated they had been in a relationship since meeting in Thailand in 2015.
The court heard about a previous incident in 2017 when Darrell sought help from neighbours after being allegedly assaulted by Buchanan. Witnesses mentioned that Darrell had bruises and made remarks about being beaten by Buchanan. The prosecution also raised a charge under the Domestic Abuse Act, with allegations of racial aggravation, physical violence, control, isolation, and coercive behavior against Darrell. The trial is ongoing before Judge Lord Cubie in the High Court in Glasgow.
