A Scottish driver has been captured on camera dumping a van load of rubbish on a housing scheme, causing outrage among residents. Mum Kate Gos, a resident of West Pilton Avenue in Edinburgh, has expressed her frustration at the continuous dumping of rubbish by tradespeople and neighbouring residents in the block of flats’ bin area. She has highlighted the recurring incidents of residents’ bins being set on fire and parking spaces being occupied by discarded items.
According to images and videos obtained by Edinburgh Live, a man was seen allegedly depositing materials at the bin area, with flames leaping from the bin in other pictures. Kate Gos lamented the situation, stating, “As our bins are the only communal bins in the area, not wheelie bins like other residents around us. Everyone from the area comes to dispose of their rubbish in our bins, it is often household bulky items, and they not only dump it at the bins but they often leave it in our parking spaces.”
She continued to express her disappointment in the local council’s response to the issue, mentioning that despite reporting the problem, only a few stickers were put up. Kate pointed out the unsanitary conditions caused by the dumping, especially with children present in the area. The bins are reportedly set on fire at least twice a month, adding to the environmental and safety concerns raised by residents.
Kate Gos suggested a solution to swap the communal bins for wheelie bins and keep them in gardens to deter people from using the area as a dumping ground. Edinburgh Council has been approached for comment on the matter.
Insights:
The incident of illegal dumping in the housing scheme highlights the ongoing issue of fly-tipping and irresponsible waste disposal practices. It not only contributes to environmental pollution but also poses health and safety risks to residents, especially children in the area. Proper waste management and community education are crucial in addressing such problems and fostering a cleaner, safer living environment for all residents. The call for more proactive measures by local authorities and residents to combat illegal dumping is essential in preserving the quality of life in residential areas.
