The United Nations has described Israel’s decision to ban Secretary-General Antonio Guterres from entering the country as a political move by its foreign minister. The UN emphasised that despite this ban, its contacts with Israel will continue out of necessity.
UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric condemned Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz’s actions, calling it another attack on UN staff by the Israeli government. The tensions between Israel and the UN have deep roots, with Israel accusing the UN of bias and antisemitism for years. The situation escalated following recent attacks by Hamas, resulting in significant casualties in both Israel and Gaza.
The UN Security Council convened an emergency meeting to address the escalating conflict in the Middle East. Guterres, while refraining from directly addressing the ban, urged all parties to cease the cycle of violence that threatens peace in the region.
Earlier in the day, Katz accused Guterres of bias against Israel, claiming that the UN chief failed to condemn Hamas attacks and the violence perpetrated by the group. Dujarric refuted these claims, stating that Guterres has consistently denounced terrorist activities and violence.
Israel has also accused UN staff from the agency aiding Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, of involvement in the recent attacks. The UN has launched an investigation into these allegations. UNRWA, a vital provider of aid in Gaza, has accused Israel of attempting to undermine its humanitarian efforts.
Guterres criticised Israel’s response to the Hamas attacks, deeming it as “collective punishment” against Palestinians. The UN emphasised the need to maintain operational and diplomatic ties with Israel despite the ban on its leader.
