An American man tragically lost his life during an Israeli air raid in Lebanon, as reported by his friends and family. Kamel Ahmad Jawad, a 56-year-old father of four from Michigan, was reportedly killed amidst the ongoing military campaign by the Israel Defense Forces against the Iran-backed Hezbollah group. Services to mourn Jawad’s passing are currently taking place in Dearborn, Michigan.
Described as a highly respected individual who had a lasting impact on many lives, Jawad was remembered as a man of service and one of the kindest and most generous individuals by those close to him. Reports indicate that Jawad had been in Nabatieh, Lebanon, where he selflessly protected his nephew during Israeli airstrikes before tragically losing his life on Tuesday.
The Department of State has been approached for comment on the incident. The airstrikes and military operations carried out by Israel in Lebanon have resulted in the deaths of over 1,000 individuals, including many children, and the displacement of a significant portion of the population. Thousands more have been injured in the past two weeks, according to Lebanon’s health ministry.
In a significant development, Israel confirmed on Tuesday that eight soldiers were killed in combat during the initial ground battles, marking the first such engagement in the region since the 2006 conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. Additionally, Iran launched a barrage of 180 missiles towards Israel, with the majority being intercepted with assistance from the United States.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard stated that the missile attack was in retaliation for the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut and the death of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran earlier in the year. The Council on American-Islamic Relations placed responsibility for Jawad’s death on the Biden administration and its support for Israel’s military actions in Lebanon.
The organisation accused the administration of enabling what they termed as “war crimes against American citizens and countless other civilians,” expressing doubt that any accountability would be sought. The group expressed disappointment in the lack of protection for American Muslims abroad and criticised the administration for its stance on the matter.
