Airdrie Library is set to introduce new groups for readers as part of its 100th anniversary celebrations. The venue has a packed program planned to commemorate this special milestone, aiming to honour both the building and the community. In an effort to encourage more members of the public to return post-Covid, the library is unveiling a variety of new groups.
The upcoming groups include “Killers and Coffee,” catering to those who enjoy both coffee and true crime. This group will feature guest speakers such as detectives, survivors, and filmmakers in the true crime genre. Another group, “A Time Travellers’ Guide to the Library,” will involve local primary five classes exploring themes of past, present, and future, culminating in a birthday party for the library at the end of the school year.
The library’s LGBTQ+ group will provide a safe space for young people in the LGBTQ+ community to gather and celebrate their culture. Scheduled events include the Killers and Coffee gatherings on the first Thursday of each month, with the first event featuring documentarian Nessa Dundon discussing her work in true crime documentaries.
The library spokesperson noted that the aim is to create connections between these themes and participants’ everyday lives, encouraging them to imagine and shape the future. The groups aim to re-engage the community and foster a love for reading and learning in a welcoming environment.
In conclusion, Airdrie Library’s initiative to launch new reader groups as part of its centennial celebrations demonstrates a commitment to engaging the community and promoting a love for literature. By offering diverse and engaging programs, the library seeks to create a welcoming space for readers of all backgrounds and interests.
