Food-inspired nicknames have topped the list as Britain’s 10 most common nicknames have been revealed in a recent study. Quirky titles such as ‘Bean,’ ‘Cookie,’ and ‘Egg’ are among the favourites. The research found that over half of Brits, 52 percent to be exact, have a nickname, with food being the most popular source of inspiration.
According to the study, many people acquire their nicknames during their school years, with 51 percent receiving their moniker by the time they finish their GCSEs. Interestingly, nine percent of Brits admit to giving themselves a nickname. However, not everyone is fond of nicknames, as over half of the respondents stated they’re only comfortable with certain individuals using their nickname, and nearly 10 percent believe that nicknames can be insulting in certain contexts. In a professional setting, 46 percent of participants consider nicknames inappropriate.
Lars B Andersen, the Managing Director at mynametags.com, commented on the findings, noting, “Our research highlights the UK’s fondness for nicknames, which often stem back to our childhood.” He pointed out that food-related nicknames like ‘Bean,’ ‘Cookie,’ and ‘Egg’ are commonly used terms of endearment from a young age.
The study also showed that some of the top 20 most common nicknames in the UK include ‘Cookie,’ ‘Egg,’ ‘Jamo,’ ‘Lala,’ ‘Ma,’ ‘Remo,’ ‘Sar,’ ‘Smurf,’ and ‘Tig.’ The research offers insight into the cultural significance and personal connections that these unique monikers hold for individuals across Britain.
