Security staff at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) in East Kilbride are set to strike for an additional five weeks due to an ongoing pay dispute. The security officers, who are members of G4S, have already engaged in a prolonged period of industrial action over issues surrounding pay, terms, and conditions. The upcoming strike dates are scheduled from January 24 to February 28.
According to a spokesperson for the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS), discussions have been held with FCDO management with hopes for a positive outcome. However, until a resolution is reached, the strike action will persist. G4S has reportedly failed to propose a pay offer that would uplift employees from low pay levels and enhance their working conditions.
The industrial action coincides with a separate dispute involving PCS members employed by OCS as cleaners and caterers at Abercrombie House. Picket lines will be in place at the location on Eaglesham Road every weekday from January 22 to February 28 as part of the ongoing strikes.
PCS alleges that both G4S and OCS have not engaged constructively in negotiations to address the disputes. The union claims that the companies have not put forth satisfactory pay offers that meet the demands for improved pay, sick pay provisions, increased annual leave, and enhancements to essential terms and conditions. The contracts for these services are overseen by the Government Property Agency, which PCS accuses of also failing to engage with the union.
Fran Heathcote, the general secretary of PCS, emphasised the importance of fair treatment for the security staff, highlighting issues such as receiving only the Real Living Wage, lack of company sick pay, and minimal annual leave entitlements. The union is calling for intervention from the relevant authorities to bring about a resolution to the disputes.
Both G4S and OCS have been approached for comment regarding the situation.
