Despite being defeated in the last nine editions of the biennial contest, Mike Weir’s team turned the tables after suffering a 5-0 defeat by the United States in Thursday’s opening fourballs at Royal Montreal Golf Club in Quebec.
With the format switching to foursomes, the International side dominated the session with a 5-0 victory. A total of 20 points are up for grabs over Saturday and Sunday, with 15 1/2 points needed to secure an outright win. Sungjae Im, who had not made a birdie in the previous round, bounced back alongside Hideki Matsuyama to secure a 7&6 win against Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele in the top match.
Adding to the tally, Adam Scott and Taylor Pendrith secured a 5&4 win against Sahith Theegala and Collin Morikawa, while Corey Conners and Mackenzie Hughes closed out a 6&5 victory against Wyndham Clark and Tony Finau. Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Jason Day clinched a close 1UP victory against Max Homa and Brian Harman, and Si Woo Kim and Byeong-Hun An wrapped up the remarkable comeback by beating world number one Schauffele and Henley by the same margin.
