Virgin Media O2 customers face switch off that will affect four million people

Virgin Media O2 has announced plans to switch off their 3G services, affecting up to 4.3 million people with older mobile handsets. This move will impact customers of O2, Virgin, and other brands that use the VMO2 network, including Tesco Mobile, Sky Mobile, and GiffGaff. The decision to discontinue 3G services is part of a broader industry shift towards faster and more efficient 4G and 5G networks. Other major mobile network operators have already completed their 3G switch-offs in favour of newer technologies.

The UK government, alongside leading mobile network operators, agreed back in 2021 to shut down all public 2G and 3G networks in the UK by 2033 to pave the way for advanced networks like 6G. This move is aimed at freeing up spectrum for future innovations such as autonomous vehicles, augmented reality experiences, and healthcare improvements. Virgin Media O2’s plan to switch off 3G services nationwide by the end of 2025 is part of this initiative.

In a proactive approach, VMO2 has been upgrading its infrastructure in Durham as a pilot project before implementing the switch-off across the UK. The company aims to support affected customers by providing complimentary 4G-ready devices to those who still use 3G handsets. Customers without 4G or 5G-compatible phones will be offered alternative solutions to ensure a smooth transition.

Research from Uswitch.com shows that millions of customers across various providers are uncertain about the compatibility of their devices with 4G and 5G networks. It is essential for customers to check their device’s compatibility and consider upgrading to fully utilise the benefits of faster and more reliable connectivity.

Ernest Doku, a telecoms expert at Uswitch.com, emphasised the importance of staying informed about network changes and suggested affordable options for upgrading devices. The shift towards 4G and 5G networks is seen as a necessary step towards providing better connectivity and unlocking the potential of future technologies. Customers are encouraged to verify coverage in their areas to ensure they have access to the best network services available.

In summary, Virgin Media O2’s decision to phase out 3G services aligns with industry trends towards faster and more advanced mobile networks. While the switch-off may pose challenges for some customers with older devices, the transition to 4G and 5G networks is crucial for meeting future connectivity needs and technological advancements. Customers are advised to check their device compatibility and explore upgrade options to fully embrace the benefits of modern mobile technology.
