A father accused of murdering his daughter has told the court that he accidentally stabbed her in the heart while they were ‘play fighting’ in their family kitchen. Simon Vickers, 50, recounted that what was supposed to be a normal kitchen scenario turned tragic when his 14-year-old daughter, Scarlett Vickers, suffered an 11cm stab wound to her chest. The incident occurred at their home in Darlington, Co Durham, with Vickers explaining to police that they were casually ‘messing around’ while he was preparing a meal. He claimed that in a moment of confusion, he flung a spatula towards Scarlett, unaware that he was also holding a knife. The severity of the wound led to Scarlett collapsing on the kitchen floor, with the blade penetrating her heart’s left ventricle.
Prosecutor Mark McKone KC argued in Teesside crown court that the depth and intensity of the wound indicated an intentional act rather than an accident. The pathologist’s report suggested that the fatal injury could not have been inflicted accidentally. Vickers allegedly gave conflicting accounts to the police, initially claiming he threw the knife, then stating Scarlett fell onto it. Paramedics arrived at the scene to find Scarlett bleeding profusely, with her mother attempting CPR. Vickers and his partner were both distressed and had bloodstained hands and clothes. Vickers later admitted to police that he believed he was responsible for Scarlett’s death. However, he denies any deliberate actions leading to her tragic demise.
Vickers’ defence lawyer, Nicholas Lumley KC, emphasised that Vickers and his partner loved Scarlett deeply and had no intention of causing harm to her. Lumley asserted that Vickers would live with the moral responsibility for his daughter’s death forever but denied any unlawful or intentional behaviour. The trial continues with Vickers facing charges of murder and manslaughter but maintaining his innocence.
Scarlett tragically passed away due to the severe stab wound in the family kitchen on July 5 last year. The trial is expected to last for ten days, with proceedings resuming shortly. This heartbreaking case serves as a reminder of the importance of caution and mindfulness even in seemingly innocuous situations.
