A man who was viciously attacked in an unprovoked assault has expressed outrage over the perceived leniency of the sentence given to his attacker. Stuart Jackson, a chef from Fife, was socializing with colleagues in Inverness in June 2023 when he was targeted by Michael Agnew, 35. The violent attack left Stuart unconscious after his head struck a kerb, causing a severe injury that required seven staples. The incident, which took place on Stuart’s last night working at the Kingsmill Hotel, has left him with lingering physical and cognitive effects.
Recalling the harrowing events, Stuart mentioned that Agnew initiated the confrontation by accusing the group of laughing at him and expressing a desire to fight. Despite Stuart’s attempts to defuse the situation and walk away, Agnew persisted and escalated the violence, ultimately causing serious harm. Stuart’s friends witnessed the brutal attack and feared for his life as blood gushed from his head. Fortunately, a timely medical assessment revealed no significant brain damage, although Stuart continues to experience symptoms of concussion and memory difficulties.
Agnew pleaded guilty to assault resulting in severe injury, permanent disfigurement, and impairment in a trial at Inverness Sheriff Court.
