‘Beloved’ Nurse Reportedly Stabbed with Scissors in Hospital Attack Captured in First Images

The nurse who was allegedly stabbed with a pair of scissors in a hospital attack has been identified as Achamma Cherian, with the first images of her following the incident now revealed. The attack took place at the Royal Oldham Hospital, where Rumon Haque has been charged with attempted murder and possession of a bladed article. Cherian, a 57-year-old nurse working at the hospital’s acute medical unit, was left in critical condition after the assault on Saturday afternoon.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed that Cherian is still receiving treatment for her injuries in the hospital. Haque, aged 37 and from Royton, appeared in Manchester Magistrates Court on Tuesday in connection with the attack. During the hearing, no pleas were entered, and Haque, represented by Greg Kemp, did not apply for bail. He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at Minshull Street Crown Court in February.

During the court proceedings, Haque, wearing a grey sweatshirt and flanked by prison officers, identified himself as “Mohammed Roman Haque.” District Judge Jane Hamilton informed him that the case of attempted murder can only be addressed by the crown court, where the possession of a bladed article charge will also be handled. Detective Superintendent Matt Walker from Greater Manchester Police’s Oldham district expressed support for Cherian, her family, and colleagues during this difficult time.

Neighbours shared that Cherian and her husband have two children but declined to comment further on the incident. One neighbour described the family as “lovely” and expressed shock over what had transpired. Another neighbour recalled seeing Cherian leave for work in the morning, highlighting the impact of the incident on the local community.

The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers faced by healthcare workers in the line of duty and underscores the importance of ensuring their safety and security in healthcare settings.
