An abhorrent paedophile who brutally attacked a grandmother while attempting to abduct and assault her grandchildren at a park in Scotland has passed away in prison. Ryan Yates, aged 44, died in custody at HMP Glenochil on December 21, 2024, as confirmed by the Scottish Prison Service (SPS). Yates was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2010 for his heinous actions, which included stabbing a 60-year-old woman who was protecting her grandchildren at Westfield Park in Aberdeen. During his trial at the High Court in Glasgow, it was revealed that Yates had the intention of kidnapping and sexually assaulting the children, aged eight and two. He callously stated that he wanted to eliminate the grandmother so he could reach the kids, showcasing his depraved nature.
The court heard that Yates carried out the vicious attack shortly after being released from prison, where he had served a seven-year extended sentence for a previous sexual offence. He confessed to attempting to murder the woman with the intent of abducting the children. Furthermore, he admitted to police that he had ventured out that day with the intention of finding children to exploit sexually. Yates even expressed delusional fantasies of a world without adults, where he could prey on children unchecked.
Judge Lord Pentland, during sentencing, emphasised the extreme danger Yates posed to the public, especially women and children, and imposed a lifelong restriction order on him. Yates had also agreed to undergo chemical castration as part of his sentence. Moreover, during his imprisonment, Yates faced additional legal issues for contacting a victim and bragging about abusing her when she was merely five years old.
Following the news of Yates’ demise, the SPS stated that a Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) would be conducted in due course, as per standard procedure for deaths in custody. Police Scotland has been informed of his passing. The SPS spokesperson expressed condolences for every death occurring in custody or in the community, highlighting the impact on those connected to the individual who has passed away.
