John Swinney Teases End to Two-Child Benefit Cap in Scotland in the ‘Expected Year’

He dismissed claims made by Scottish Secretary Ian Murray that Holyrood had not requested the necessary data from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). Furthermore, Swinney revealed that he had engaged in private discussions with Keir Starmer regarding the SNP’s strategy to address the policy in Scotland. Murray, however, expressed doubts about the clarity of the Scottish Government’s requests to the department.
In his address in Stirling about eradicating child poverty, Swinney declared that the first mitigation payments could be disbursed this year provided that the necessary systems are operational in time. He also pledged that if the two-child benefit cap is removed nationwide, the funds reserved for Scottish mitigation efforts would still be allocated towards combatting child poverty.
