A flash drought turned the landscape dry, with high winds adding to the dangerous conditions. The fire was ignited near Lahaina after a live power line fell onto overgrown brush. Firefighters initially believed they had extinguished the flames, only for them to reignite amid strong winds. The resulting chaos left residents stranded, with communication networks down and emergency systems ineffective.
Tragically, 102 individuals perished in the fire, with two still missing. The victims, ranging in age from 7 to 97, faced harrowing conditions as they tried to escape.
