Young individuals in Dumfries and Galloway have the opportunity to participate in potentially life-saving cardiac screenings set for this spring. The DH9 Foundation, established in memory of David Hill, a former St. Joseph’s College pupil who tragically passed away at 30 from an undiagnosed heart condition, is organising these screenings. Scheduled for April 12 and 13 at The Cairndale Hotel and Spa, these screenings are open to individuals aged 14 to 35 in the region.
The Foundation, represented by Lesley and Rodger Hill, shared their heartfelt journey and discussed the charitable work they have undertaken since David’s passing. The couple emphasised the importance of these screenings, made possible through fundraising efforts, in potentially saving lives. Those interested in participating are encouraged to register online at www.testmyheart.org.uk. Subsequent screening sessions are planned for June and September, with each session accommodating up to 200 individuals.
The screening initiative stems from donations and fundraising activities, including the Cycle4David event last March, which raised over £70,000 for CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young). The inaugural screening earlier this year provided 200 young people with ECGs and consultations, offering a proactive approach to heart health in the region.
Through the DH9 Foundation, the Hills are dedicated to honouring David’s memory by raising awareness and supporting initiatives related to Young Sudden Cardiac Death. This work aligns with the Scottish Government’s Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest Strategy 2021 to 2026, aiming to increase CPR and defibrillator responsiveness in emergency situations.
By providing free CPR training and defibrillators to schools and community organisations in Dumfries and Galloway, the Foundation is actively fostering a heart-safe environment. The DH9 Foundation’s commitment to cardiac health and its impact on the community underscores the importance of proactive measures in preventing sudden cardiac events among young individuals.
In conclusion, the DH9 Foundation’s efforts in promoting heart health and offering screenings to young people in Dumfries and Galloway exemplify proactive and impactful community initiatives. By raising awareness, providing resources, and facilitating screenings, the Foundation is making significant strides in potentially saving lives and creating a heart-safe environment in the region.
