The world’s first underwater Burns Supper made waves in Dumfries, becoming a sell-out success for the Big Burns Supper festival. Combining tradition with innovation, the unique experience took place at Dumfries and Galloway’s DG One Leisure Centre, where attendees donned bathing costumes or kilts, donned headphones, and immersed themselves in an abridged version of a traditional Burns Supper. The event, priced at £22.50, featured a specially curated mixtape by 10 local artists, creating a one-of-a-kind dining experience.
Participants had to be strong swimmers capable of completing laps in the pool, as demonstrated by performers Jordan Chisholm and Daryl Wilson. The finale awaited them outside the pool, where a Burns Supper hamper awaited as a reward. Graham Main, the executive producer of Big Burns Supper, expressed excitement at the innovative event, showcasing the festival’s spirit of curiosity and fun while paying homage to Scotland’s national poet in a groundbreaking manner.
The festival, returning after a hiatus, features over 150 events spread across three weekends in January, including cabaret, comedy, music, and entertainment in more than 30 venues. The highlight of the festival is Burns Night on January 25, culminating in Burns Night Live, streamed globally with an audience of 500,000. This year’s edition also features the Dumfries Carnival, hailed as one of Scotland’s largest community events.
