UHI Perth Engineering Graduate Wins Alumni of the Year Award
Nurina Sharmin, a talented engineering graduate from UHI Perth, has been honoured with the prestigious 2024 Alumni of the Year award. The award, presented to Nurina by UHI principal and vice-chancellor Vicki Nairn in a virtual ceremony held in December, recognises her outstanding achievements in the field of aerospace engineering, her contributions to the community, and her continued support for UHI as an alumni ambassador.
Having completed her BEng (Hons) in Aircraft Engineering and Air Transport Operations at UHI Perth in 2020, Nurina has since progressed to become an Integration Engineer at BAE Systems. During her time at UHI Perth, Nurina held various leadership positions, including vice president for education and engagement with the Highlands and Islands Student Association, showcasing her dedication to academic excellence and student welfare.
Furthering her academic pursuits, Nurina obtained a master’s degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Leeds. Her research work includes developing a skeletal kinetic mechanism for alternative aviation fuels and exploring the use of bamboo as a sustainable material for flight infrastructure. Nurina has also been actively involved in projects such as the Falcon 2 project, funded by Boeing and the UK Department for Transport, where she oversaw the design of an inclusive flight simulator.
Notably, Nurina is a staunch advocate for promoting careers in aviation and aerospace, serving as an Aviation Ambassador for the UK Department for Transport. She also contributes to the community as a school governor with the Trinity Multi-Academy Trust and as a Civilian Instructor with the Royal Airforce Air Cadets.
