North Lanarkshire Council Collaborates on World Gaelic Week Program Announcement
North Lanarkshire Council, in partnership with Seachdain na Gàidhlig, recently unveiled the World Gaelic Week program, featuring various events planned in the area. The Scottish Seachdain na Gàidhlig has introduced its most ambitious initiative yet, bringing together Gaelic speakers, learners, and enthusiasts from different parts of the country and beyond. A meeting was held at the Chapelside Community Centre, where members of North Lanarkshire Council’s Gaelic and community resettlement teams gathered along with Seachdain na Gàidhlig director Joy Dunlop.
The fourth annual celebration of the Gaelic language is scheduled to run from February 24 to March 2, themed as Ceanglaichean gun Chrìch (Building Connections). In North Lanarkshire, the Gaelic Ceilidh House in Airdrie will host performances by the Cumbernauld Gaelic Choir, providing a platform for residents, including newly resettled New Scots, to engage in sharing songs, poems, and phrases in Gaelic. This free event, set for February 26, is organised by the local authority’s community learning and development team.
This year, over 60 groups have been granted funding through the event’s Small Grants Fund, supported by Bòrd na Gàidhlig, to hold activities showcasing the language’s heritage. A record-breaking 100-plus funding applications were received, indicating a growing interest in Scotland’s native language, with a 44 per cent increase compared to 2024. The aim of the week is to celebrate the cultural, linguistic, and human connections fostered through Gaelic, with activities designed to embrace and involve diverse communities.
