Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance service (SCAA) is gearing up to introduce a cutting-edge helicopter later this year. The new Airbus H145 D3 is currently in the production phase and will undergo a customised aeromedical fit-out before commencing operational service. SCAA currently operates two helicopter emergency response air ambulances, stationed at Perth since 2013 and Aberdeen since 2020, and has attended to over 6,500 emergencies since its inception in 2013. The new aircraft, a twin-engine with five rotors, will replace the existing EC 135 at the Aberdeen base. Additionally, a new 10-year contract with aviation partner Babcock will equip crews in Aberdeen and Perth with Night Vision Imaging Systems (NVIS) technology to enhance operational capabilities.
SCAA’s Chief Executive, David Craig, expressed that the new helicopter represents a significant operational investment in the charity’s history. He highlighted that the H145 D3 would propel SCAA into the next decade, serving as the most advanced air ambulance in the UK, especially in challenging environments. The collaboration with the Scottish Ambulance Service and ScotSTAR North EMRS will ensure swift response and provision of specialist medical support across Scotland. The incorporation of NVIS at Perth base enables SCAA to respond safely during dark hours, expanding their reach to patients even in harsh winter conditions.
The enhancements will incur an additional £2 million annually on top of SCAA’s existing £8 million operational costs. To fund these upgrades and sustain operations, a nationwide fundraising campaign, “Operation Skyward,” has been initiated. Craig emphasised the importance of community support in ensuring timely critical care for those in need, expressing gratitude for the public’s continuous generosity towards SCAA.
