Campaigners call for ‘robust’ action against sports stars convicted of domestic abuse against women

Campaigners are urging for decisive action to be taken against sports stars who have been convicted of domestic abuse against women. The call for stronger measures comes after rugby player Stuart Hogg, who currently plays for French club Montpellier, received a one-year community payback order for admitting to a domestic abuse charge involving his estranged wife Gillian. This is not the first instance at his club, as two other players, Mohamed Haouas and Wilfrid Hounkpatin, have also faced convictions for domestic violence.

Haouas, a player for Montpellier, was re-signed by the club despite a domestic abuse conviction for hitting his wife, resulting in a one-year jail sentence in May 2022. Similarly, Hounkpatin, a one-cap France international from Castres, was signed to a three-year deal despite being found guilty of domestic violence against his partner. Women’s rights campaigners are now emphasising the need for sports clubs to take a more proactive stance in response to domestic abuse cases involving their players.

Susan Smith of For Women Scotland highlighted the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions, especially those in influential positions like sports stars who are often seen as role models. She stressed the significance of addressing allegations of domestic violence with a more robust approach to ensure the well-being and safety of victims. Mary Howden from Women’s Right Network echoed these sentiments, condemning male violence against women as inexcusable and urging for stricter consequences for perpetrators.

In light of these events, it is essential for sports clubs to not only condemn such behaviour but also take tangible steps to address and prevent instances of domestic abuse within their organisations. By fostering a culture of zero tolerance towards violence against women, sports clubs can contribute to creating a safer environment for all individuals involved. The spotlight on this issue serves as a reminder of the responsibility that comes with being a public figure, and the necessity of upholding ethical standards both on and off the field.
