The fate of Nibi the beaver has become the subject of a controversial court case, as rescuers fight to prevent her release into the wild. Nibi, a 2-year-old beaver, has been raised by rescuers since she was a baby and has formed close bonds with them. The case has landed in court, with the rescuers fighting against Nibi’s release. Adam Teper, an attorney representing Nibi’s rescuers, expressed amazement at the global support for the beaver, highlighting the unprecedented level of interest in the case. A judge has granted a temporary reprieve, allowing Nibi to remain at Newhouse Wildlife Rescue in Chelmsford, pending a hearing scheduled for Friday.
The rescue group has been actively sharing Nibi’s story on social media, generating widespread support and thousands of comments. An online petition to prevent her release has amassed over 25,000 signatures, while lawmakers and the governor have also voiced their concerns. Governor Maura Healey has pledged to ensure Nibi’s safety and protection.
Jane Newhouse, the founder and president of the rescue group, explained that efforts to reintegrate Nibi with other beavers have been unsuccessful, as she appears to prefer human interaction over bonding with her own species. Nibi currently resides in a large enclosure with access to a pool, yard, and rehabilitation space at the rescue facility.
Newhouse sought approval from MassWildlife for Nibi to become an educational beaver, allowing her to visit schools and other venues. However, the request was denied, leading to the order for Nibi’s release. Newhouse expressed concerns that releasing Nibi into the wild could endanger her life, as she lacks the necessary skills to survive independently.
Despite the prospect of Nibi potentially showing more interest in the wild in the future, Newhouse emphasised the need to prioritise Nibi’s well-being and safety. She described Nibi as a beloved member of their rescue group, living a comfortable and pampered life with ample space to roam and enjoy various foods.
The rescue group remains dedicated to advocating for Nibi’s continued care and protection, as the legal battle unfolds in the coming days. The outcome of the court proceedings will determine Nibi’s fate and whether she will be allowed to remain in her familiar surroundings with the rescuers who have cared for her since her early days.
