Isla Grist, a 16-year-old girl known as the ‘butterfly girl’ due to her rare skin condition epidermolysis bullosa (EB), has received a life-changing gift from the family of a victim of a tragic knife attack. Isla was selected as the inaugural recipient of support from the Barnaby Webber Foundation, established in memory of 19-year-old Barnaby Webber, who lost his life in a violent incident in Nottingham alongside Grace O’Malley-Kumar and Ian Coates. Isla, hailing from the Black Isle near Inverness, was presented with a lightweight, collapsible electric wheelchair by the foundation.
The new wheelchair significantly boosts Isla’s independence, enabling her to travel and socialize more freely with her friends. Isla’s mother, Rachael Grist, expressed gratitude for the newfound autonomy the wheelchair has provided her daughter, allowing her to venture out with carers, friends, or family members at her convenience. The wheelchair’s portability, breaking down into small pieces to fit even in compact vehicles like her sister’s Fiat 500, has opened up a world of possibilities for Isla.
The Barnaby Webber Foundation founders, David and Emma Webber, journeyed from Taunton, Somerset, to witness Isla embracing her newfound mobility. The foundation aims to assist young individuals facing life challenges, a cause close to the hearts of Barnaby’s bereft family. Isla, who has endured the pain and limitations of EB since birth, is particularly grateful for the opportunities her new wheelchair affords her, emphasising the immense impact it has had on her life.
In addition to the wheelchair’s practical benefits, Isla can control it remotely using a mobile app. The significance of this gesture of kindness and support from the Barnaby Webber Foundation extends far beyond the physical realm for Isla, embodying hope, freedom, and the collective spirit of compassion and generosity.
