Best month to sell your car – and you’ll need to act quickly

February Emerges as the Optimal Month to Sell Your Vehicle

Recent research has indicated that acting swiftly may secure an excellent deal if you are considering selling your car, as dealers are currently offering attractive prices to replenish their stock due to high demand at the beginning of the year. Data from Carwow, an online car selling platform, reveals that many owners are receiving offers exceeding their vehicle’s initial valuations. The findings illustrate that February is the prime window for selling cars, with average offers reaching 95% of the valuation. This trend is attributed to dealers preparing for the release of new registration plates in March and the approaching summer season.

Current data shows that SUVs are fetching an average of 102% of their valuation, with red cabriolets closely following at 122%. Black coupes secure the third spot at 102%, while silver estates are at 101%. For electric vehicles (EVs), January has proven to be a lucrative market, with average offers hitting 98% of valuation. Given the increasing demand for EVs, the current and upcoming months could present an ideal opportunity to maximise your earnings. On the other hand, if you own a van, it might be prudent to wait until spring, as offers for vans peak in March and April, reaching 112% to 115% of the valuation.

Vehicles of bold colours are currently in high demand, with red and pink cars averaging 101% of valuation. Surprisingly, gold cars have been leading the market in January, fetching offers as high as 130%. Even unconventional colours are proving to be a profitable choice for sellers. Iain Reid, head of editorial at Carwow, notes, “Our data clearly demonstrates that the early months of the year offer an excellent opportunity for sellers to secure higher-than-expected prices.”

Motoring experts at The AA urge individuals selling their vehicles to notify the DVLA, emphasising the importance of avoiding any future liabilities related to the new owner’s offences or convictions. Once the DVLA is informed, any vehicle tax refund is automatically processed. In conclusion, being well-informed about market trends and timing could significantly impact your car-selling experience.
