A teacher from Lanarkshire has released a new book that pays tribute to her Grampa living with Alzheimer’s disease, shedding light on the impact of dementia on families and children. Linzi Bowden, a 44-year-old principal teacher at Orchard Primary School in Wishaw, developed the book titled “Grampa’s Memory” over several years, drawing inspiration from her stepfather’s battle with Alzheimer’s. The story follows the journey of her own family, including her two daughters, Olivia and Cora, as they navigate the challenges of her stepdad’s illness.
Through the eyes of her youngest daughter, the book explores the emotional rollercoaster of watching a loved one’s memories fade away due to Alzheimer’s. Linzi shared that the book was a way to help her daughters understand the changes happening to their Grampa while honouring his legacy as a “wonderful man” who is grappling with the disease. She highlighted the struggle of seeing her stepdad’s cognitive abilities deteriorate and the family’s adjustment to his move to a care home.
Linzi emphasised the importance of being open and honest with children about dementia, allowing them to comprehend the complexities of the disease and offering support as a united front within the family. She encouraged families facing similar challenges to prioritise the wellbeing of the individual with dementia and cherish every moment spent together. Linzi’s book weaves a narrative that progresses with the protagonist’s age, mirroring her daughters’ evolving understanding of Alzheimer’s.
In addition to “Grampa’s Memory,” Linzi has previously authored a children’s book called “Mummy’s Tummy,” which celebrated the arrival of her youngest daughter. Both books were published by Austin Macauley Publishers and feature characters inspired by her own family, including her stepfather, depicted authentically down to his distinctive cowboy boots. The heartfelt narrative in “Grampa’s Memory” captures the poignant journey of families confronting Alzheimer’s, offering solace and understanding to readers grappling with similar experiences.
