Scots Call for ‘Kerbside Recycling Revolution’ and Increased Investment in Collections
In a recent poll conducted by Survation for the aluminium packaging industry body Alupro, it has been revealed that seven in ten Scots are advocating for a significant overhaul in recycling practices, urging for urgent investment in local authority collections. The survey highlighted that 69% of respondents are in favour of the Scottish government allocating funds towards enhancing recycling services, as Scotland’s household recycling rates have plateaued at 43.5%. In comparison, Wales boasts a significantly higher recycling rate of 66.6%, indicating the room for improvement in Scotland.
The poll, which engaged 1024 Scottish participants between January 7 and 13, also indicated widespread support for the implementation of a long-awaited Deposit Return Scheme in Scotland. Initially, a tailored Scottish scheme was abandoned in 2023 due to Westminster’s interference, leading to the anticipation of a UK-wide scheme by 2027. Tom Giddings, the Executive Director at Alupro, emphasised the public’s profound concern for environmental issues and waste management, underscoring the benefits of increased recycling rates for both society and the environment.
The Scottish National Party (SNP) government recently unveiled a new five-year strategy outlining plans for a “circular economy”, which includes proposals for enhanced recycling services. Among the proposed initiatives are potential introductions of kerbside collections for textiles and the establishment of a statutory code of practice for household waste services across Scotland. These measures aim to equip councils with more tools to bolster household recycling efforts and reduce bin contamination.
