A man who was found in possession of a cannabis stash with a street value of £520,000 at Glasgow Airport is now facing the prospect of a jail term. Rico Janneman, a Dutch national, was apprehended with 52kg of cannabis, a Class B drug, in his luggage at the busy airport on August 15th last year. The estimated bulk value of the drugs was £197,600 with an estimated street value of £520,000. At his court appearance at Paisley Sheriff Court, Janneman, hailing from Veghel in the Netherlands, admitted to being involved in the supply of cannabis.
Rico Janneman, 23 years old, was described by his defence agent Kevin Brady as part of a “sad story.” It was explained in court that when Janneman first appeared, he was deemed a flight risk due to being a Dutch international with no ties to the area. Sheriff Thomas Ward acknowledged the severity of the case, stating, “This is a serious matter. It’s a substantial amount of drugs, and it’s likely you will go to jail.” Despite lacking previous convictions in the area, a criminal justice social work report and a restriction of liberty order assessment were requested before sentencing. Janneman, currently a prisoner at Low Moss jail in Bishopbriggs, East Dunbartonshire, will return to court for sentencing on February 7, with his remand in custody continued.
