Palestinian, Filipino, and Mozambican activists, along with a London-based research agency, have been honoured with the prestigious Right Livelihood Award for their outstanding contributions to human rights and their communities. The award, presented by a Stockholm-based foundation, recognises individuals and organisations who have made a significant impact on society.
The recipients of this year’s award were commended for their dedication to non-violent activism and advocacy against oppression and exploitation. Issa Amro and Youth Against Settlements in the Palestinian territories were recognised for their unwavering resistance to the illegal occupation, promoting civic action through peaceful means. In the Philippines, Joan Carling was lauded for amplifying Indigenous voices in the face of ecological crises, while Anabela Lemos from Mozambique was honoured for empowering communities to stand against exploitative projects and demand environmental justice.
Forensic Architecture, a research agency based at the University of London, was also awarded for its innovative digital forensic methods that help ensure justice and accountability for victims of human and environmental rights violations. The organisation’s pioneering work has been instrumental in shedding light on issues that are often overlooked.
The Right Livelihood Award was established in 1980 to recognise efforts that are not typically honoured by traditional accolades such as the Nobel Prizes. Over the years, the award has celebrated the work of individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds and disciplines, highlighting the power of grassroots activism and advocacy. The 2024 laureates join a prestigious list of past winners, including renowned figures like Greta Thunberg and Denis Mukwege.
The recipients will officially receive their awards in a ceremony in Stockholm on December 4, where they will be acknowledged for their remarkable achievements.
