Storm damaged Ayrshire leisure hub in line for a transformation

Ayrshire’s storm-damaged leisure hub, Quay Zone in Girvan, is set for a major transformation following the submission of plans for alterations and a two-storey extension. The popular facility suffered significant damage during stormy weather in January 2024, leading to its temporary closure due to extensive water damage.

The proposed £5.4m project includes expanding the cafe area and creating a terraced space to enhance the overall capacity and visitor experience. LMA Architects, based in Glasgow, are the agents behind the design, with South Ayrshire Council as the applicant. The aim of the extension is to provide a more spacious and inviting cafe space that can better accommodate visitors and support community engagement activities.

The Quay Zone has been a vital resource for the local community, fostering wellness and connections among residents of all ages. The proposed transformation not only aims to restore the building to full operation but also improve its capacity to serve the community effectively. The expanded cafe area will offer unobstructed views of Ailsa Craig and the surrounding seascape, creating a welcoming and versatile environment for guests.

Prior to the storm damage, discussions were already underway to expand the cafe area due to high visitor traffic. The unfortunate incident provided an opportune moment to move forward with the proposal, enhancing the functionality and comfort of the space. The proposed two-storey cafe extension will feature large windows for scenic views, along with a terrace space for outdoor seating during pleasant weather.

The project aligns with the council’s vision to create a more inclusive and vibrant hub for community engagement and well-being. The plans are currently under consideration, with a decision expected in March, signalling an exciting chapter for the Quay Zone and its role in serving the local community’s recreational and social needs.
