A brave young woman from Glasgow has defied all odds by participating in the renowned Miss Great Britain beauty pageant after a gruelling battle with cancer. Seanagh McFarlane, a university student from Scotland, faced a life-changing moment at the age of 15 when she discovered a small lump on her neck. Little did she know that this discovery would lead to a diagnosis of Hodgkin’s lymphoma, turning her world upside down.
Recalling the distressing period, Seanagh shared, “I was just a carefree, teenage girl and suddenly everything was turned upside down. I honestly thought I was going to die.” Her dreams of completing her National 5 exams and pursuing a career in law seemed shattered as she embarked on a challenging journey of chemotherapy and treatment at the Schiehallion children’s cancer ward in Glasgow.
Despite facing losing her hair, battling sickness from treatment, and coping with a loss of confidence, Seanagh’s resilience and determination shone through. In September 2018, she received the news of being in remission, marking a significant turning point in her life. Inspired to reclaim her dreams, Seanagh returned to school, passed all her Highers, and is now studying to become a primary school teacher at the University of Glasgow.
Now 22, Seanagh is set to make her debut in the Miss Great Britain pageant as a finalist in the Glasgow regional heats. The competition, known for promoting women empowerment and community values, aligns with Seanagh’s own journey of self-discovery and empowerment. In addition to her pageant aspirations, Seanagh also founded Spirit2Strength, a non-profit organisation supporting women and girls experiencing hair loss.
