The world’s longest train tunnel, hidden beneath the Earth, stretches an incredible 35 miles and is revolutionising train travel as we know it. The Gotthard Base Tunnel, located in the Swiss Alps, holds the title as the longest and deepest railway tunnel globally, connecting the cantons of Uri and Ticino. This engineering marvel allows trains to reach speeds of up to 155mph, significantly cutting travel time for both passengers and cargo.

Train journeys are often viewed as an efficient and peaceful mode of transportation, especially when passing through tunnels that navigate through mountains and hills. While the UK boasts over a thousand rail tunnels, most are crossed in a matter of moments. However, the Gotthard Base Tunnel offers a unique experience, taking approximately 20 minutes to traverse its impressive length.

Initially proposed in the late 1940s as a dual-level tunnel for trains and cars, the Gotthard Base Tunnel project gained approval from Swiss voters in 1992. Construction kicked off in November 1999 and finally opened to the public on June 1, 2016, after 17 years of meticulous work. Despite its immense length, trains zip through the Gotthard Base Tunnel in a mere 20 minutes, reaching speeds of up to 125mph. In cases of delays, trains can accelerate to an astonishing 155mph, making it one of the fastest single-track railways in the world. While not matching the speeds of Japan’s bullet trains or France’s TGV, the Gotthard Base Tunnel remains a remarkable feat of engineering.

In addition to the Gotthard Base Tunnel, other notable options for rapid travel include Japan’s Seikan Tunnel in the Tsugaru Strait and the Channel Tunnel linking the UK and France. These tunnels, along with the Gotthard Base Tunnel, showcase the incredible advancements in rail infrastructure worldwide, shaping the future of train travel for generations to come.
